politics is local

Everybody is down on Governor Schwarzenegger, he of the swollen lip after his motorcycle crash. People out West are saying he's no different than his predecessor, Gray Davis. Not true.

In his new budget, Arnold exposed the fact that since he's been in office, what's known as the 'structural deficit' is down, from $17 billion under Davis, to the current level of $5 billion under Schwarzenegger.

Good news for all Californians. And more good news for Arnold: He won't be charged in the motorcycle crash involving himself, his son, Patrick and another motorist. Whew!

Here in San Diego, the hits just keep on coming. First, we had yet another election yesterday to decide two vacant city council seats. In District 2, my buddy Kevin Faulconer holds a narrow 544 vote lead over environmental attorney Lorena Gonzalez. There are an additional 1,600 absentee ballots left to be counted in this race, so Kev, remember, absentees usually bode well for GOP candidates. Hang in there, Dude.

In District 8, Ben Hueso swept past the eminently more qualified candidate Luis Acle, with 2/3 of the vote. To put this into context, our recently elected Mayor, Jerry Sanders, overwhelmingly won throughout the city of San Diego. One of the few places he didn't fare well was in District 8.

Also in my city, news today focused on the revelation that our former Mayor and his attorney, plus four current city council members and their attorneys, are actively seeking to keep under wraps legal bills stemming from the controversial San Diego city pension case.

The lawyers represent former San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy and council members Toni Atkins, Jim Madaffer, Brian Maienschein (my old high school classmate) and Scott Peters.

Here's my position: All current San Diego city council members should resign, effective immediately. Too much corruption, too many unanswered questions, too much mystery going on. We just need a big hose to clean City Hall out completely.
