stay home

Will someone tell me why it is necessary for journalists--in this case ABC news anchor Bob Woodruff and his cameraman Doug Vogt--to be in Iraq?

I'm terribly sorry about the severe injuries sustained by these two guys. But are journalists really getting stories from this war zone?

I'll admit that I enjoyed the embedded coverage at the start of the war. But now? No.

Bob Woodruff's got a wife. He's got a high profile new job. There are already plenty of people on the ground, people from ABC. Why go?

The fact is, reporters are just in the way. Soldiers have to shift their focus away from doing their jobs and make the safety of the reporters--civilians--their first priority. Why is the government allowing this?

ABC News is reporting that both men are 'showing improvement,' but on Drudge the news on Woodruff is that he 'suffered multiple broken ribs, and shoulder and skull fractures. Bomb fragments reportedly pierced Woodruff's neck and back, though apparently not his brain. Doctors have kept him unconscious; the extent of the head wounds was not clear. Woodruff underwent three hours of surgery on Monday to remove shrapnel.'
