pump pain
Word is that the President caught a glimpse of gas prices at an DC Exxon station today on his way to give a speech about gasoline prices and he immediately called for a probe.
What to do? Bush has already decided to temporarily halt deposits to the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve to make more oil available for consumer needs. I hope the Bush Administration also will end the .54 tariff on Brazilian ethanol, which is the equivalent of those nasty steel tarriffs in place against Canada. I hope they will repeal the national gas tax. That would help consumers, as would eliminating taxes on gasoline at the state level.
It is a crime that the US gets 60% of our oil from foreign sources -- Canada, Mexico, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia -- instead of using our own resources. Blame falls directly on the Democrats, plain and simple, because attempts at drilling offshore or in Alaska, are always blocked by the Left with the trial lawyers and the Greens.
Had the Senate passed ANWR in '01, I wouldn't be paying $3.18 for a gallon of gas at my neighborhood Mobil today.
I just finished watching Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ) on Kudlow & Company. Shadegg threw out some interesting numbers about America's natural resources: 400 trillion cubic feet of natural gas...20 billion barrels of oil. We've got to start utilizing America's own natural resources. End of story.
Let's be clear about the oil companies. They are not gouging. If there was any gouging going on, the Federal Trade Commission would have already put a stop to it, since they do nothing but pore over gas pricing all day long. Hell, Coca-Cola has higher profit margins that the big oil companies do. Gas prices are set by world market pricing and it happens every year ahead of the big travel summer months.
