ruse?
I'm not quite sure the Democrats ever really wanted a vote on the immigration bill. President Bush, however, did want it. He was serious about it. He's been courting the Hispanic vote for 14 years.
Dick Morris is talking about how this entire affair was just a ruse by Ted Kennedy and the Democrats to position themselves to lock up a higher percentage of the Hispanic vote ahead of '08.
In 2000, Gore won 30% of the Hispanic vote. In 2004, Kerry got 10%. That 20% difference kept W in the White House.
Throughout the debate Bush, key Republicans and the Editorial Board of the Wall Street Journal voiced concerns about the GOP being left out in the political wilderness if this bill went down to defeat.
