gay polar bears

California's Supreme Court has legalized gay marriage. For now.

"In its 4-3 ruling, the Republican-dominated high court struck down state laws against same-sex marriage and said domestic partnerships that provide many of the rights and benefits of matrimony are not enough.

"In contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation," Chief Justice Ronald George wrote for the majority in ringing language that delighted gay rights activists."

And the Bush Administration has decided to propose listing polar bears as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act, which is just so incredibly stupid I can't believe they are actually serious.
"Identifying polar bears as threatened with extinction could have an enormous political and practical impact. As the world's largest bear and as an object of children's affection as well as Christmastime Coca-Cola commercials, the polar bear occupies an important place in the American psyche."
Great hard news reporting from WaPo.
"Because scientists have concluded that carbon dioxide from power-plant and vehicle emissions is helping drive climate change worldwide, putting polar bears on the endangered species list raises the legal question of whether the government would be required to compel U.S. industries to curb their carbon dioxide output."
My question is: Do we really know that? Just because a couple of scientists believe it... That doesn't necessarily prove anything. The climate change nuts are always talking about 'consensus' among the scientific community. There's no consensus.
