breaking filibusters
Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum writes a prescient op-ed in today's Philadelphia Inquirer about Obama's ace-in-the-hole: Mr. Bipartisanship himself, John McCain.
"Losing the presidency will not be the final chapter of McCain's life story. He knows the path to "Big Media" redemption. Working with the man who vanquished him in November will show them all the real McCain again.Makes perfect sense. Remember this is the same McCain who seemed to be rooting for Obama to win the presidency.
"McCain will forge common ground on a long list of initiatives that go far beyond where he has gone before, including the stimulus package.
"Alas, the two White House rivals now stand positioned to help secure each other's place in history. The next mainstream media blockbuster could be Barack Obama and John McCain: The Movie."

What a shame. We could've had Fred Thompson - except he ran a stealth bomber campaign, only revealing himself to make a quick remark or stinging comeback at a debate. Effective, but once the applause died down, he was back under the radar.
Mitt Romney tried to out-moderate McCain whenever Johnny tacked to the center, and while I think he would have been better off going hard Right, I can't really blame him since the mood in the nation seemed very unfavorable to Republicans (but not Conservatives - note the Palin rallies upstaging Obama at every turn from mid-September onward to Election Eve).
Huckabee was a likeable fellow, but sadly tried something called Populist Conservatism, which basically equates to Compassionate Conservatism, which basically equates to counting hanging chads in a swing state for three weeks after election day.
Finally, we had Ron Paul. Great economic ideas, but loony foreign policy. Markets still operate on the same principles they did back in the old days, but foreign relations do not. Hiding in a 'Fortress America' would not have worked during the Second World War, the Cold War, or after September 11th. I can sit at my computer and talk to people 7,000 miles away on my webcam, and talk to people 7,000 miles in the other direction on my cellphone, all while emailing a FW: containing 45 LOLCatz pictures to approximately 600 people in my address book and handing a cup of sugar to my next-door neighbor who ran out while baking cookies.
I don't think the Framers envisioned that when writing the Constitution. Show them an iPhone, and they'd pull a Giles Corey on you until you confessed to witchcraft.
I went with McCain in '08 because he was the guy. Like I'd go with Nader?
The campaign McCain ran highlighted the cracks in his armor. I disagreed with him on a lot of stuff, but I disagree with Obama more.
Romney would have been a much better choice and I voted for him in the primary.
I think the fact that McCain is rumored to be already in the tank for Obama all for the sake of his beloved "bipartisanship" tells us all we need to know about the man.
I voted for McCain too. There was no other reasonable choice, and it was in the hopes that Palin might be able to convince him to steer to the right on some key issues like energy, "climate change", and spending.
It wasn't a good cycle, it wasn't a good candidate, and the media frenzy against Palin just put wind behind the storm clouds.
