death panels?

Have you ever noticed that when Obamacare apologists attempt to go after the critics of Obamacare they almost always try to point to what they regard are the most outlandish and ludicrous charges critics have leveled against our newest entitlement program? Rarely do they bother addressing the most legitimate and glaring critiques of Obamacare such as its budget gimmickry, that it won't lower health care premiums, and that it is not budget neutral, just to name a few. The standard defense for Obamacare by its apologists is always some variation of, "Well, there's been a lot of misinformation going around about healthcare reform such as Sarah Palin's charge that there are death panels." That these charges are designed to "Scare Granny", we are told. How ludicrous that any one would think that about Obamacare, they imagine we should respond.

Sarah Palin has been held up as the poster girl for ridiculous criticism of Obamacare time and time again so it must be amazingly frustrating for Palin bashers to have to concede that on this issue of death panels Sarah Palin is actually correct! Yes, you will not find entities in Obamacare that literally go by the name of death panels in the legislation, but is it really enough to discredit the death panels charge simply because that specific terminology is not used? Surely not.

In Britain's system of socialized medicine there is a panel called NICE, a panel of experts who make determination as to what medicines and treatments are appropriate to administer based upon various criteria of prospective patients, such as age and other considerations.

From the Boston Herald,

"Nowhere are the deficiencies of government health-care management more clear than in Britain’s creation of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, established in 1999 by Prime Minister Tony Blair. NICE’s mandate: Save money by spending health dollars more efficiently. Using complex formulas, NICE has targeted high-end surgical procedures, medical devices and, especially, drugs."

Obama recently nominated Dr. Donald Berwick for the position of Head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

"...Last June, Berwick said NICE has 'developed very good and very disciplined, scientifically grounded, policy-connected models for the evaluation of medical treatments from which we ought to learn.'”

Couple this with the fact that medicare under Obamacare will feature panels of experts modeled after NICE and we arrive at the inescapable conclusion that Palin bashers will probably never admit: that Obamacare does indeed include "death panels". Call them what you want, but in Medicare administration under Obamacare there will be panels of experts making life and death determinations for its victims, er... patients.

Score another win for Palin over her detractors.

You'll be hearing a lot more about this guy Berwick, who is so in love with NICE.
